About the Dave behind the Johnsen
Renaissance painters and Cartoon artists. American Crooners and Rock Music. Psychology, Sociology and the intertwining complexities of World History. Yes, art and the humanities were always more interesting to me than the math behind the hard sciences. Studying the vast scope of the universe or building a skyscraper is awe inspiring. String theory is absolutely fascinating, but the Hercullian math behind that type of work does not stir my passionate side. Instead, words, images and people have always had the ability to make my heart skip a joyous beat. I would simply rather spend my time figuring out how to conceive a message that reaches into the human mind and heart in some significant way. It's a challenging pursuit combining artistic, technical, and psychological insights. A pursuit that keeps your wits tingling and your curiosity jumping.
At work I devotedly stick to trying to do the best job I can. I can't wrap my mind around pumping out average work. I strive to provide my clients/employers with pixel perfect output in thought and product. That extra effort is always rewarded when I see someone excited by the results. After all, Art is not a Science. Sometimes you have to keep playing around with all your good ideas until the magic combination springs to life!
In my spare time I have two current hobbies. In one I am endeavoring to hit a tiny white ball as far as possible, in a fairly straight line. Some days I'm very excited by the results. Some days I want to throw the clubs as far as I can in a very straight line. My other hobby time is peacefully more consistent. I am working hard to progress from dedicated guitar strummer to a guy who really "plays" the guitar. Tips on either hobby are always welcomed!

* TODAY - UPDATE *
* In early 2018, I began work at an excellent Nashville company. My position is as full-time Senior Graphic Designer. My work includes copywriting for marketing collateral, and the graphic design of all the print and digital needs for our company and our clients. I have also been tasked as the manager in charge of the organization, design, and technical requirements for all corporate marketing websites, as well as all our client websites across the U.S. In addition, I have been called upon to design projects for our new parent company based in Atlanta. With my work life more than full, this website was retired at the very beginning of my new role, and has not been updated. If you come across any out of date oddities, or a technical malfunction, that would be understandable.
This site does not include any of my work from said new companies. There are now years of new design work I have never released for general view. (Like the web banner below - copywriting and graphic design.) Now we probably need to add a photo of me with "The" beard.
